Keep your onions and potatoes young

The best way to store onions and potatoes is in a cool, dry and dark place, like a cupboard. But they both produce moisture, which actually causes them to sprout much quicker. It’s a simple fix. Store them away from each other. A good 30 centimetres.

If your potatoes have already sprouted you can still eat them, just chop the sprouts off. If they’re going green, remove the green areas, or if they are really bad, then you should discard them. The green can indicate natural toxins that may not be destroyed by cooking.

Fascinating facts about potatoes and onions

  • Unwashed potatoes can be stored longer than clean potatoes
  • Raw potatoes don’t freeze well, but you can freeze cooked potatoes
  • Store cut onions in an airtight container in the fridge.
